Boy Scouts and Temple Adat Elohim

An Exchange of E-Mail

First, some clarification is needed. The E-mail messages below refer to a sermon given by Rabbi Alan Greenbaum on eve of Yom Kippur (the holiest of Jewish holidays) at Temple Adat Elohim (a Reform Jewish congregation) in 2001.

At Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), Jews are supposed to fast, taking no food at all from sunset to sunset. It is a tradition at Temple Adat Elohim to collect bags of non-perishable food — representing the food we do not eat because of the fast — which is then donated to a local food bank.

In your Kol Nidre sermon for 2001, you said:
"When it came time to plan for this year's High Holidays, the Social Action Committee leadership took a very clear position which I strongly support; that we would not invite the Boy Scouts to collect our bags of food for MANNA as we have in years past. And so this year we have invited the Girl Scouts to collect the bags of food, since their national organization has no such discriminatory policy."

I don't recall what happened in 2002, but I seem to recall seeing boy scouts collecting the bags this past Yom Kippur.

Hi David,

I guess you missed all that transpired after High Holidays 2001. We had a series of wonderful community meetings which resulted in a resolution by the TAE Board stating that, although we strongly disagree with the policy of the National Boy Scouts of America, we would not penalize local scouting groups at temple and in this way we would be able to work for change from within the scouting organization instead of being a voice in the wilderness that would undoubtedly be ignored. Bottom line: We now utilize the scouts and lodge complaints to National about their anti-Gay policy. Hope all is well.

-Alan

Given how the Boy Scout of America has reacted to complaints from within its own organization and how the national leadership is now taking strong disciplinary action against local scouting groups that defy the ban against gays, I feel quite confident that complaints from Temple Adat Elohim are ignored.
